Great product!
Simple and straightforward to use. Relatively painless. Excellent customer service when I called for additional supplies.
Horrible
My employer switched insurance companies and my new insurance company won't pay for the test strips for the awesome Freestyle meter, so I had to switch to a new meter. I tried this one and was very disappointed.
I don't think the designers of this product have diabetes, or even tested it out on any diabetics. It might seem good on paper, but in reality it is a mess. Luckily it was only $20 so I don't feel too bad throwing it away.
Pros:
* It has a bright, easy to read screen.
* Its lancet device is the most pain-free I've ever used.
Cons:
* It requires a very large blood sample compared with what I'm used to. This means visible scars on my fingers and lots of leftover blood all over the place.
* This thing is ginormous. We type 1 diabetics need to carry our meters everywhere we go, and this is way too big. It's probably 8x the size of my last meter. It's probably 20x the size of an iPod Nano, and that plays music, videos, and games, and even takes movies. All the Accu Chek Compact does is tests blood sugar, but it's for some reason way bigger. It's not "compact" by any stretch of the imagination.
* The lack of an LED light on the bottom (like the Freestyle has) means it's hard to line up the strip with the drop of blood in the dark. Because the meter is so thick, and the strip doesn't extend out very far from the end of the meter, the meter usually casts a shadow on the end of the strip so even in moderate light I find it hard to see.
* It only holds one cartridge of strips, so if you're leaving the house and there's only one strip left in the cartridge, you have to remember to bring another cartridge and put it somewhere (which defeats the purpose of an all-in-one meter). They should have let you put two cartridges in there so there was always a backup if necessary.
* The motor that dispenses a strip is noisy. Noisy enough that I don't want to use it in meetings. It would also probably disturb a classroom.
* The button that causes a strip to be dispensed is easily pressed by accident when the meter is in your pocket. This, along with the too-frequent failed tests, means I waste 5-10% of the strips.
* The attached lancet device is a nice idea, but for the first few weeks it was hard to attach to the side of the meter. I've finally gotten used to it though. It's also really big.
Painless, easy and convenient
I had been using the older Accu-chek compact plus, but recently replaced it with this revised version. So far no regrets - it's the same terrific meter I've grown accustomed to, just in some new packaging.
Among the many features I like:
- Painless lancet...notably better than most of the competitors thanks to the thinner lancets and the teflon coating
- Highly accurate...agrees exactly with my doctor's unit and with the lab
- Convenient and easy to use, one piece design
- Large, legible display
- Drum design holds supplies for 17 tests so there's less to carry around or fumble with
- Good memory functions built-in
- Long battery life...my last one was three years old and I never once needed to replace the batteries with daily testing
Something not mentioned on the Amazon product description is the wonderful interface to the Accu-chek software package called SmartPix, which you can order from the manufacturer. This software talks to the meter using an IR (infrared) signal like your TV remote control, and it lets you create all sorts of useful data on your PC. The product generates all sorts of charts and graphs, which you can share with your doctor to give him a much more detailed view of how you've been doing. I'm a big believer in data collection on the PC, and I routinely monitor blood pressure, exercise (via my pedometer) and blood sugar levels this way.
About the only complaint I have is that the supplies for this meter are somewhat hard to find locally, and when I can find them, they tend to be 2-3 times as expensive. I just order through Amazon way in advance and that seems to work for me. I also liked the older style case better, but luckily the meter fits in my old case.
Recommended.
Great glucose monitor
ACCU-CHEK is the only brand I have had during five years of diabetes and the Compact Plus seems to get better with each purchase. (I am currently on my second one). It is very easy to use and gives super fast readings. The test strip drum feature eliminated having to insert a test strip every time you test. I heartily recommend this monitor to everyone who needs one.
great!
works great! great idea with the pin attached the the meter so i can't lose it
